RUMFORD – Selectmen acted on several issues during its long meeting Thursday night. They ranged from calling for repayment of prepaid oil, to modifying a policy on buying or leasing items from the public works department.

The board voted to take whatever action may be necessary to be reimbursed about $48,000 for oil products from Woodstock Oil for which the town contracted two years ago.

During recent months, the town has been receiving some reimbursement through product delivery, but the board decided to ask for the money.

In a related matter, they voted to go with an area collaborative to purchase oil products from Community Oil of Rumford.

Town Manager Jim Doar said he plans to discuss the matter with town attorney Tom Carey.

The board will act as negotiating agent and information gatherer with Time Warner Cable to devise a new contract. The town had advertised for five residents to serve on a committee, but no one submitted their names. The 10-year contract expires in September 2009.

They also agreed to modify an internal policy that dictates rules for residents or others when buying or leasing items from the town public works department. Such requests must no longer wait for the next formal selectmen’s meeting. Instead, written requests for such things as sand, or use of the town’s sweeper, as was recently the case with neighboring Dixfield, may be approved by selectmen at the town office.

They gave the go-ahead for the local chamber to sponsor a Fall Foliage River Run from the Hanover boat dock to the Rumford boat dock on Oct. 13. Doar said Friday that the Parks Commission crew was busy cleaning up the town’s boat dock.

In other promotional issues, selectmen tabled action on awarding the contract for masonry work for the River Walk Park until the board has a chance to review the area where the granite will be installed. Action is expected at the Sept. 20 board meeting.

In other business, selectmen:

• granted permission to Eddie Shurtleff, president of the Moontide Water Festival Committee, to hold a once-a-month ‘Texas Hold ‘Em’ tournament at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall to benefit next year’s fireworks display;

• approved adding “Rumford, Maine” to the ax that the likeness of Paul Bunyan holds at the information booth. Many tourists have their photographs taken in front of the popular attraction as they pass through town;

• authorized the purchase of a new police cruiser through the Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments cooperative;

• directed the River Valley Chamber of Commerce and former Selectman Eugene Boivin to resolve an issue around the “Wall of Fame” at the information booth;

• outlined the procedure for lodging a complaint, as requested by Boivin, who was directed to put his complaint in writing; and

• decided to set a time to set goals for the town manager at the Sept. 20 meeting.
