LEWISTON – The gyros were popular. So was the Kostas Taslis Band, and dancing under the tent.

And of course, the pastry table. It had the baklava.

“We can’t keep the table full fast enough,” said volunteer Angela Bournakel.

About 6,500 people attended this year’s Greek Festival held at the Greek Orthodox Church on Hogan Road. The annual festival grew from two days to three this year.

On Saturday, the last day, about 2,500 people attended.

Some came from as far away as Biddeford and Saco to hear Greek music, tour the church and sample baklava – a sweet pastry covered in honey syrup. Others didn’t have to drive so far.

Linda Girardin and her significant other, Don Bosse, live in Auburn.

“We came up for the food,” Girardin said.

It was their first time at the festival, and the first time they’d ever had spanakopita, a dish with spinach and feta cheese in layers of filo dough. They decided it was “OK.” Then planned to check out the pastry table.

Jason Levesque and his 9-year-old daughter, Ali, go to the festival every year.

“A, we’re Greek,” he said.

“And it’s fun,” she said.

For Ali, the highlight of the festival was going on the Moonbounce with her little brother. For her dad, it was the community atmosphere, the music, the food.

“We’ve only had the gyro so far,” he said. “For right now we’re pacing ourselves.”

The family went to Greece a couple of months ago. The festival brought back good memories.

“It’s a nice reminder of Greece,” Levesque said.
