WINTHROP – Ellis Paul, a principal in the wave of singer/songwriters who emerged from the Boston folk scene, will bring his charismatic performance style to Winthrop High School Performing Arts Center Saturday, Sept. 15.
Hailing from a potato farming family in northern Maine, Paul has received 13 Boston Music Awards and has released 11 CDs. He recently released a documentary/concert DVD titled “3,000 Miles,” as well as “Notes from the Road,” a critically acclaimed book of poems and stories.
His songs are regularly heard in hit movie and TV soundtracks.
Over his career, Paul has built a vast catalog of music that blends poetic imagery and philosophical introspection with memorable melodies. He has shared the stage with such artists as John Mayer, Bill Morrisey, Shawn Colvin and John Gorka.
The singer/songwriter, and poet averages 150 shows a year, traveling across the United States and Europe, playing venues from church basements to Carnegie Hall.
“His precise unsentimental poetry mixes urban despair with fascination for details … a fine, subtle singer who can lift from a whisper to operatic highs. These songs seep into your memory like tea in hot water,” wrote the Austin Chronicle.
The 8 p.m. concert will benefit the Winthrop Lions Club, in support of community charities. Tickets are $20. The school is at 211 Rambler Road.
