Maine State Police continue to investigate circumstances surrounding the shooting death of a 50-year-old man early Saturday in Porter, a small town south of Brownfield on the southwestern fringe of Oxford County.

According to Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland, the out-of-state man was shot to death in the home of a relative off Spec Pond Road near South Hiram. He declined to name the victim and homeowner, pending next-of-kin notification.

McCausland said the shooting was reported at about 1:30 a.m. to the Oxford County Sheriff’s Department. When deputies arrived soon thereafter, they found the man dead inside, he said in a statement.

“Detectives said there may have been an argument between the victim and the homeowner, who fired the shot,” McCausland said.

An autopsy will be conducted by the Maine Office of the Chief Medical Examiner while the investigation continues. As of late Saturday night, no charges have been filed, McCausland added.
