RUMFORD – Selectmen will set short- and long-term goals for Town Manager Jim Doar, decide whether to have two maple trees removed from the front of the Municipal Building, and learn about a conference on economic development when they meet on Thursday.

The regular twice-monthly meeting begins at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of the Municipal Building.

Doar said some selectmen have been concerned that the growth of the two trees obscures the view of the nearly century-old building and have suggested that they be removed. A decision is expected to be made on Thursday.

Doar said he will update the board on the status of property tax bills, the homestead and veterans exemptions. He said his report will also include a discussion on whether to replace windows in the auditorium during a coming renovation project.

Selectmen plan to provide Doar with a list of goals they want him to work on. Doar said Monday that he has not seen that list.

In other matters, selectmen will learn of an economic development conference organized by resident Phil Blampied for Sept. 29. Among participants is Maine Commissioner of the Department of Economic and Community Development John Richardson.

Reports will be heard from the tax collector and finance officer, and action is expected on requests for use of the Wall of Fame, for a turning lane on Veteran’s Street, and a permit for the annual homecoming parade for Mountain Valley High School.

A closed session is scheduled at the end of the meeting with legal counsel. Doar declined to provide the subject of the closed session, but did say that action is expected by the board.
