The scoop: Sanford contractor Thomas Dumont submitted the lowest of 10 bids for construction of the town office building. His base building price was $397,000.

By doing its own site preparation, which has begun, the town will save an estimated $140,000, Town Manager Eva Leavitt said.

The scoop: Seven junkyard operators received permits at Tuesday’s meeting. Those approved were Thomas Heikkinen, Fern Street; Lester Quimby on Quimby Road; Harry Williams on Cobb Road; George Spear, Bates Road; David Richardson, with sites on Auburn and Harlow Hill roads; and Jesse Walker, County Road.

The scoop: A new park and overlook at Main Street and Turner Center Road has been dedicated to longtime Turner residents Roy and Thelma Nickerson. From 1961 until 1986 the couple ran a variety store at that location. Eight years ago, the Nickersons donated the land to the town, which razed the building, installed benches and a commemorative plaque.

The scoop: The town office will be closed Thursday, Oct. 4, so the entire staff can attend the Maine Municipal Association’s annual convention.

The issue: There are empty seats on the Leavitt Institute Building Board, Turner Center for the Arts, Town Budget Committee and the Appeals Board.

Candidate nomination sheets may be obtained at town hall or downloaded from the town’s Web site, www.turnermaine.com.

The scoop: Two maintenance projects are scheduled for the Boofy Quimby Memorial Center. A contract for roofing already was awarded to Dave’s Roofing & Siding, and requests for proposals for painting the building will go out this week, Town Manager Eva Leavitt said.
