Wondering if that wet spot in your backyard is a vernal pool? To meet the state’s definition of a significant vernal pool that warrants protection it must:

• be a temporary body of water that typically fills during the spring or fall and dries during the summer

• have no permanent inlet (such as a spring feed)

• no fish

• support threatened species such as the boghaunter dragonfly, spotted turtle or Blanding’s turtle

• Breed 40 or more wood frog eggs, 20 or more spotted salamander eggs, 10 or more blue-spotted salamander eggs; any adult fairy shrimp
