AUBURN – The West Paris Westies defeated the Augusta Red Sox 4-1 Sunday at Auburn Suburban LL to claim the playoff championship in the Central Maine Men’s Senior Baseball League.

Dominant pitching and timely hitting were the keys to victory. The Westies took a quick 3-0 lead in the last of the first. Mike McBride drew a leadoff walk and stole second. Brian Cox beat out a grounder to put runners at first and third. A passed ball scored McBride followed by a 2-out walk to Rick Whitney. Shawn Holbrook then lined a 2-run double to make it 3-0.

West Paris increased the lead to 4-0 in the fourth on an RBI single by Jerry Verrill who had 2 hits on the night.

Whitney, who was in complete control on the mound, allowed only 2 batters to reach base through 5 innings. He walked 1 and struck out 6. The Sox scored their only run in the sixth off reliever Mike Godin who hurled the last 4 innings. Sox pitcher Torey Carr, who banged 2 hits, scored the run.

Wes Smith was a repeat hitter for the champs. The Sox only other hit came off the bat of Joe Wilson.

West Paris finished the season at 13-4. The Sox wound up 11-6.
