SKOWHEGAN – John C. Witherspoon has been named the next president and chief executive officer of Skowhegan Savings Bank. He will join the bank in early November, replacing Virginia F. Howard, who is retiring after 32 years with the bank.

Witherspoon has been chief executive officer of the Finance Authority of Maine since 2004 and, prior to that, served as president and chief executive officer of UnitedKingfield Bank until 2003. He joined Kingfield Savings Bank in 1979 and was president from 1984-2000, during which time the bank grew from a $5 million, one-branch mutual savings bank to a $180 million public company with 10 locations. After being acquired in 2000 by Camden National Corp., Kingfield Savings merged with United Bank to form UnitedKingfield Bank.

Witherspoon earned a bachelor of science degree in business from the University of Maine at Orono in 1979 and is a graduate of the National School of Banking. He is a past president of the Maine Association of Community Banks, as well as a former director for the Maine Bankers Association.

He and his wife live in Kingfield, where he is active in several community organizations.
