LEWISTON – On Saturday, Oct. 20, the Franco-American Collection will celebrate the publication of “Voyages: A Maine Franco-American Reader,” a new anthology with nearly 70 contributors.
The new book explores subjects as diverse as Quebec-Maine-Acadia frontier history, immigrant drama, work, genealogy, women, discrimination, community affairs, religion, archaeology, politics, literature, language and humor.
It was published in association with Tilbury House of Gardiner.
The celebration, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the University of Southern Maine’s Lewiston-Auburn College, will begin with conversation over coffee, cider, homemade donuts and hot ployes (pancakes). At 10 a.m., there will be presentations by Mercedes Gastonguay, Helen Levesque, Gerard Robichaud, Rhea Cote Robbins, Sylvie Charron and Gerard Forgue. At 11:30 a.m., Joseph Wood, president of the University of Southern Maine, will give a welcome, followed by editors Nelson Madore, Barry Rodrigue, Corinna Miller and Chase Hebert.
Attendees will get to see the Third International Tortiere Bake-off, whetting their appetites for a noontime Franco-American lunch to be served by Franco-American students at Lewiston-Auburn College.
The afternoon will bring presentations by Linda Pervier, Michelle Mogan, Ray Levasseur, Denis Ledoux, Jere Dewaters, Juliana L’Hereux and Greg Chabot and his troupe, Du Monde d’a Cote.
