LEWISTON – A burglary suspect trying to blend in with the furniture, a Prince Charming wannabe making off with a glass shoe and the disappearance of a parking meter kept police on their toes over the past week.

On Tuesday night, officers went to a mill on Main Street after they were told a man had been breaking in and stealing wood pegs and other items.

They pulled over a car nearby but what they found were not bland wooden rods. A passenger in the car admitted that he had entered the building and made off with an orange glass shoe.

“It’s ornamental,” said Lewiston police Sgt. David Chick. “My guess would be that he was thinking about using it in a decorative sense.”

The delicate shoe, a glass high-heel, was recovered. Ornamental or not, the alleged crime still carries a criminal charge. Kevin Juskewitch, 46, of Ash Street was charged with burglary.

On Saturday, police had a more difficult time locating a woman accused of breaking into Exclusive Store at 37 Sabattus St.

When police arrived, they learned that a woman had broken into the store by breaking a window.

She was said to be inside filling a box with clothing, and when officers entered, they saw a shadowy figure running toward the back of the store.

Police searched the building while other officers waited outside.

The woman was not immediately found, though the cops were getting warmer. They found what they were looking for in a recording studio at the back of the store.

“She was hiding underneath the cushions on a sofa,” Chick said. “The officers knew she was hiding somewhere, so they hollered verbal commands for her to come out.”

Apparently tired of huddling down with the loose change, the suspect squirmed out and gave up. Arrested was 27-year-old Erin Schneider of College Street on a charge of burglary. Police said she was preparing to steal women’s clothing and a man’s hat.

Police are also searching for the culprit who made off with an entire parking meter on Middle Street. They suspect it happened over the weekend. It was not immediately clear how much loot was inside.

“Those things are not going to hold enough to make it worth your while, I don’t think,” said Chick.

In their investigation of the swiped parking meter on Wednesday, there was no arrest yet.
