MECHANIC FALLS – Mechanic Falls-Poland Adult and Community Education’s fall program is under way. The Learning Center is accepting new day and evening students for skill upgrading, high school diplomas and GED testing.

Heartsaver AED with Wayne Cotterly provides students with training in the performance of cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the use of an automatic external defibrillator (AED) on adult and child victims.

In addition, the course teaches how to handle emergencies involving choking and the use of breathing barriers. The newly re-designed program emphasizes skills practice through video-based instruction. Students will receive a Heartsaver AED course card upon successfully completing the course requirements.

The new course is physically demanding; students should wear comfortable clothing, and be prepared to practice on manikins on the floor throughout the three-hour course. Cost includes all materials needed for the course. It will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16. Registration is $45/$50 Mechanic Falls and Poland resident/nonresident.

Craft nights with Pat Demers will let participants make the craft of their choice. They will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Oct. 23 and 30, Nov. 6 and 13. A minimum of four people is needed.

Make a quilted photo wall hanging with Betsy Canan from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays, Oct. 24 and 31 and Nov. 7 and 14. A minimum of six is needed. Registration is $20/$23, Mechanic Falls/Poland resident/nonresident.

“Fitness for Life” with Deb Conway is an aerobic class that features step aerobics and resistance exercises to tone and strengthen the entire body before the holidays. Classes are taught in levels to accommodate adults of all abilities and fitness types. Teens are welcome with an attending adult.

Registration will be held from 6 to 6:20 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25. The first class will start at 6:30 Thursday. Six-week sessions will continue throughout the school year. When school is not in session, classes will not be held. Registration is $25/$28, Mechanic Falls and Poland resident/nonresident. For details, call Conway at 998-5282.

“Keeping Peace at Home” will be sponsored by Advocates for Children. Participants will learn a range of conflict management skills and strategies that are designed to promote respect, cooperation and successful communication.

Staff recommends that people attend “Good Discipline, Good Kids” and “Keeping Peace at Home” to receive the greatest benefit from the program. It will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30. A minimum of five people is needed to run the class. Registration is $10/$12, Mechanic Falls and Poland resident/nonresident.
