FRYEBURG – The Oxford County Democrats recorded more than 700 participants in the Presidential Preference Straw Poll conducted at the Fryeburg Fair, as well as many additional visitors to the booth who proclaimed themselves “undecided.”
Sen. Hilary Clinton bested the field with 53 percent, followed by Sen. Barack Obama at 19 percent, John Edwards at 16 percent, and the rest of the field each receiving less than 5 percent.
Visitors to the booth came from as far away as Germany, Arizona and California, with the majority coming from Maine and New Hampshire.
The two special election races involving Oxford County were highlights of the fair booth.
Sheryl Briggs of Mexico is the candidate in District 93, and voters in Canton, Carthage, Dixfield, Mexico and Peru will vote in that election on Nov. 6.
Kate Smith of Sebago is the candidate in District 99, involving the towns of Baldwin, Cornish, Denmark, Sebago and Limington.
The Oxford County Democrats welcome involvement of volunteers in the special election activities this fall, as well as in the caucuses on Feb. 10, 2008, which will kick off a 2008 campaign in Maine.
