RUMFORD – The SAD 43 school board on Monday will try to decide which members will represent their towns on a soon-to-be-formed regional planning committee.
Monday’s meeting is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. in the library of Mountain Valley High School.
Superintendent Jim Hodgkin said each of the district’s four member towns are required to choose three representatives to sit on the planning committee, whose task it will be to work on a merger plan with two or more neighboring school districts. SAD 43 is considering a merger with SADs 21, 44 and Union 37.
Hodgkin said school board members from Rumford and Mexico will likely be chosen. Roxbury does not have a sitting board member, and Byron has only one seat on the board. That member has already informed Hodgkin that she cannot serve on the planning committee.
Hodgkin said board members from Rumford and Mexico may represent the two smaller towns.
Selectmen from the four member towns are looking for community representatives. Rumford and Mexico have placed a joint advertisement in a local newspaper seeking volunteers. A municipal official from each of the district’s towns must also serve on the planning committee.
Hodgkin said he has asked that boards of selectmen consult with him prior to appointing community representatives.
Three representatives from Hanover, an unaffiliated town with Hodgkin as superintendent, must also choose a town official, community member, and school committee member.
SAD 21 in Dixfield and SAD 44 in Bethel, as well as the individual school committees in Union 37 in the Rangeley area, are either in the process of choosing representatives or have already chosen them
Hodgkin said the first joint meeting of representatives from all four districts will likely take place in early November. A partial consolidation plan, at least, must be submitted to the state Department of Education by Dec. 1.
Also on Monday’s SAD 43 agenda is an update on the fall sports program by Athletic Director John Bernard. The board will then hear various reports from Region 9 School of Applied Technology committees.
