PARIS – A reception by the Daughters of the American Revolution on Sunday will honor a member who was appointed to be the national librarian general of the organization.

The event will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. at the First Baptist Church on Paris Hill Road. It will include a tour of the Hamlin Memorial Library, refreshments and the presentation of a gift to Pauline Bartow of Otisfield.

Bartow said she received a phone call informing her she had been selected for the position in July.

“The first thing that I blurted out of my mouth was, ‘You have got to be kiding me,'” said Bartow, who has been with the organization for 23 years. “It’s safe to say I was stunned.”

“We’re kind of proud of her, from our local chapter getting into a national office,” said Marilyn Jones, historian of the Molly Ockett chapter of the organization.

Bartow says the national librarian general is one of 12 national offices serving the president general of the organization. Her duty is to educate members about the services of the Daughters of the American Revolution Library in Washington, D.C., and represent its interests.

Bartow described the library as the “largest and one of the most comprehensive genealogical research libraries in the country.”

The Daughters of the American Revolution is a nonprofit women’s organization dedicated to improving education, preserving history and promoting patriotism. Members are eligible if they can prove that they are descended from a patriot of the Revolutionary War.

Bartow said invitations have been sent to nearby chapters of the organization, but the event will be open to the public.
