Launch ramp lease

The scoop: A representative from Florida Power and Light pitched a plan to selectmen that would lease the boat launching ramp on Center Bridge Road, at the Greene Bridge, to the town for $1,500 a year. Under the proposal, the utility company would upgrade the area’s sanitary and recreational amenities in return for the town’s taking on minor maintenance such as mowing the grass and generally keeping the place neat.

Up next: A meeting is scheduled for Nov. 17 with the Planning Board and Budget Committee to discuss the proposal.

Wood lot plan

The issue: More than 100 acres of town forest are in need of management, and representatives from New England Forestry presented selectmen with a proposal for review. Among the options to be considered is the extent of work the town wants done, Town Manager Eva Leavitt said.

Up next: Once board members have reviewed their choices, the forester will return to talk more about the proposal.

Septic agreement signed

The scoop: Municipal officials signed a five-year agreement with Lewiston-Auburn Water Pollution Control to empty and dispose of the town’s septic system waste for an annual fee of $250. The agreement amounts to a renewal of the current contract, Town Manager Eva Leavitt said, “because the money’s the same.”

Appointments

The scoop: Selectman Ralph Caldwell was named to fill a vacant seat on the town’s Budget Committee; likewise, Winston Gilbert Jr. was named to the Appeals Board.

Board: Sabattus selectmen

School consolidation woes

The issue: Sabattus is having a hard time finding another school district to partner with to meet the statewide education consolidation plan because of excess spending in the middle school budget.

Up next: Town Manager Greg Gill, the school board and several selectmen will attend a meeting next week in Augusta to discuss the dilemma with the state Board of Education. Additionally, Rep. Scott Lansley, R-Sabattus, also has offered to hold a workshop with the town to try to find a solution.
