BETHEL – A Songo Pond Road resident escaped serious injury Tuesday afternoon when his truck slipped into neutral, dragging him down his driveway and into a ditch, police said.

Robert Bates, 62, who suffered scrapes and bruises, refused medical treatment at the scene, according to police Chief Al Carr.

The accident happened about 3:15 p.m.

“He got home and went to get something out of his pickup truck,” Carr said of the 2000 Ford F150 truck. “He said he reached in the window and (accidentally) hit the shift lever. The truck rolled downhill, dragging him while he was trying to put the truck in park.”

Patrolman Jack Taylor said that both Bates and the truck landed in a ditch at the end of his 45- to 50-foot-long driveway.

The truck had minimal damage.
