NEWPORT – A road in Newport is being reopened after a family forced its closure by removing a culvert.

A family from neighboring Plymouth removed the culvert under the Whitaker Road, which bears their name.

A deep trench across the road cut off access to 14 homes.

The Whitaker family claims ownership of the road and says it never gave anyone permission to use it.

They told landowners and the town that Nov. 30th would be the cut-off date for closing it.

Local residents were surprised to find a big crater in the road weeks ahead of the deadline.

Newport officials opened up a detour and then started repairing Whitaker Road.

They also got a court order prohibiting the Whitakers from touching the road until a court hearing next week.
