LEWISTON – Artur Lukomyansky, who has been with the St. Petersburg State Symphony Orchestra as principal clarinetist since 1996, and Toma Popovici, a founding member of the Tancrède Trio, will perform Saturday, Nov. 10, at the Franco-American Heritage Center.
The 7:30 p.m. concert will be presented by the center in association with the Cohen Chamber Music Series at Hebron Academy.
Born in Ukraine, U.S.S.R., Lukomyansky won the prize for clarinet in the International Competition Concertino-Prague in 1983. In 1997, he graduated from the St. Petersburg State Conservatoire, receiving a degree as a solo, ensemble and orchestra player.
He has toured with the St. Petersburg State Symphony Orchestra in Japan, the United States, Spain, Greece and Switzerland. His repertoire includes a wide range of works, including both classical and contemporary music. He has taught at the St. Petersburg State Conservatoire since 1998 and performs regularly as a soloist and as an ensemblist.
Popovici graduated from the Academy of Music in Bucharest in 1999, under the guidance of Dana Borsan. He received a master’s degree in 2002 from Boston University College of Fine Arts, where he studied with Horia Mihail. He is pursuing an advanced degree at Boston University and holds a grant from the Saul B. and Naomi R. Cohen Foundation.
Popovici’s many prizes and awards include first prize at the Anne and Aaron Richmond Competition in Boston in 2001, first prize at the Dinu Lipatti International Competition in Bucharest in 1997, and first prize at the Waki Osaka International Competition in Japan in 1996.
The program includes works by Claude Debussy with a premiere rhapsody for clarinet and piano. The rhapsody will be followed by the Sonata No. 2 for clarinet and piano in E flat major, op 120, by Johannes Brahms. Lastly, the duo will present Ludwig van Beethoven’s Sonata No. 32 in C minor, op. 111.
