PERU – By a vote of 41 to 30, voters Monday chose to keep the position of road commissioner an elected one during a vocal special town meeting.

This means that the town will be going into winter with no road commissioner because the next election is scheduled for June.

Selectman Bill Scott has been acting as road foreman since David Gammon resigned in September. Scott said he was not happy with the outcome of the vote.

If the vote had been to allow the Board of Selectmen to appoint a road commissioner, the position could have been filled as soon as applications were reviewed. There are presently two road workers.

Most of the board was in favor of an appointed position so it wouldn’t get caught without a road commissioner again. Selectman Jim Pulsifer said this isn’t the first time the town is without a commissioner for the winter. He also said selectmen have asked Gammon to stay, and added that he had done a good job with capital improvement projects during the summer.
