LEWISTON – A local man accused of breaking into an ex-girlfriend’s home, threatening her with a knife and sexually assaulting her in September was indicted Thursday by an Androscoggin County grand jury,

Police said Jason Jean, 31, of 127 Oak St., was free on bail for an assault charge when he went back to the woman’s Hogan Road apartment on Sept. 24 and raped her.

He was indicted Thursday on charges of gross sexual assault, aggravated criminal trespass, criminal threatening and violating conditions of release.

Police arrested Jean after forcing their way into the Hogan Road home where the alleged assault occurred. The woman had fled the home, but Jean refused to come outside or answer the door when officers knocked, police said.

Jean was taken for medical treatment for self-inflicted knife wounds before he was moved to the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn.

Police said Jean had gone to the home in the early morning and forced his way inside. There, he held a knife to the victim’s throat and sexually assaulted her, police said.

The woman was later able to leave the home and call for help. When officers arrived, the door was locked and Jean wouldn’t answer their calls to come outside.

He was arrested without incident by police, who burst into the apartment. It was believed Jean had cut himself with the same steak knife he had used to allegedly threaten the woman.

Jean was moved to the Maine Correctional Center in Windham shortly after his arrest. He remained there Thursday night.
