CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Red Sox shortstop Julio Lugo is headed home to the Dominican Republic to assist relief efforts for victims of Hurricane Noel.

Lugo was at City Hall in Cambridge to thank local residents for the help they’ve given so far to the storm’s victims. The storm killed nearly 80 people and left tens of thousands homeless.

Lugo says he wants to see the damage firsthand and do what he can to help. His own family made it through safely.

The Sox have a strong connection to the Dominican, with Lugo and sluggers Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz having roots there. Lugo declined to discuss baseball.
