NORWAY – Stone-Smart Post No. 82 of the American Legion will be hosting the Veterans Day service at 10 a.m. Monday in the Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School auditorium.

Norway, Paris, Oxford and Buckfield American Legion Posts, as well as the Floyd Harlow Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in Paris, will be participating, according to Robert Sessions of the Legion.

The Veterans Day address will be given by Dennis Bowden, a 22-year Marine Corps veteran from Norway who has also been a civilian worker in Iraq. He will talk about the history of Veterans Day and what it means to him.

Bowden, who is originally from South Portland, worked on jets for four years before going into the active reserves and then to active infantry tow gunner. He has served in embassy duties around the world in places such as Russia, Malaysia, Poland and South Korea, guarding top government officials including presidents and secretary of state. He has been a drill instructor, gunnery sergeant and was medically retired from service in 2003.

This week, Bowden has spent time talking to students in the area about Veterans Day.

“I hope everyone comes out and supports the veterans,” he said Friday.

Monday’s program will begin with the welcome by Ralph Millett, Post 82 commander and master of ceremonies, followed by the presentation of Colors and the Pledge of Allegiance led by Millett.

The national anthem will be played by the high school band followed by an invocation by the Rev. Richard Beal of the Norway Universalist Church.

Bowden’s keynote address will preceded the playing of taps by the high school band and benediction and closing ceremonies.

Refreshments will be served after the program, which is open to the public.
