LEWISTON – Cumberland police hope to have answers by the end of this week regarding allegations that a Lewiston High School runner had sand thrown into his eyes during a race.

Mohamed Noor says he went from second place to finish 124th at the 73rd New England Cross Country Championships in Cumberland on Saturday after a spectator threw sand into his eyes.

Noor, who is one of the top cross country runners in the state and Class A state champion, claims that a short, white male threw sand into his face early in the race.

Cumberland police officer Peter Volk said Sunday night that he still has three or four more people to interview.

“Right now, we’re still trying to determine whether or not a crime was committed here,” Volk said. “We’ve been interviewing witnesses all day.”

Lewiston High School Athletic Director Jason Fuller also refused to comment on any new developments in the investigation.

“Everyone wants answers and I wish I had more of them,” he said Sunday night. “But people need to be patient with the situation.”
