AUBURN – An autopsy is scheduled for today to determine the cause of Adam Beggs’ death.

Beggs, 18, of Auburn, died Saturday after drinking alcohol at a party with friends.

Larando Sweeting, 23, also of Auburn, was arrested by city police and charged with furnishing alcohol to the underage Beggs.

The autopsy will be performed at the State Medical Examiner’s facilities in Augusta, according an office spokeswoman. It wasn’t clear when findings might be available; some results of tests for substances could take days or longer to receive back.

On Saturday, Auburn police answered a call regarding an unresponsive male at 22 Granite St. They immediately started CPR on Beggs, who was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston where he was pronounced dead.

Auburn police were mum on the progress of their investigation on Sunday.

State Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland said Auburn police are in charge of the case.

Beggs was a student at Central Maine Community College after graduating in June from Edward Little High School. Leslie Morill, an assistant principal at Edward Little, called Beggs death “terribly shocking news,” adding that the teenager “will be greatly missed.”

Morill said school officials are waiting to hear from students and parents regarding their needs in terms of emotional support and counseling.

“The doors are opened all the time at the school if they need us,” Morill said Sunday.
