PARIS – Attorneys agreed Wednesday in Oxford County Superior Court that a man charged in a standoff in Rumford last month remains a flight risk and should be held without bail while he undergoes psychiatric evaluations.

In a brief court appearance before Justice Robert Crowley, Norman “Bo” Thompson, 35, of Mexico and Lewiston, pleaded not guilty to burglary, theft, criminal mischief and violation of conditions of release.

Thompson was indicted by a grand jury in October after his arrest in connection with a 14-hour standoff with police at his mother’s home in Mexico last month. He gained national attention earlier when he jumped off the third-floor balcony in Lewiston trying to flee police and was tackled by a Sun Journal photographer.

Thompson, who police say has a long criminal history, has been held at the Oxford County jail. He is also a suspect in a dozen other home and car burglaries in October, according to a Paris police officer.

Family members have contended that Thompson, who has been held in a segregated cell at Oxford County jail since his arrest, needs psychiatric treatment.

“We’re not seeking to have him released,” said his attorney, Don Hornblower. “I can’t stand here and say he’s not a flight risk.”

Hornblower told Crowley that Thompson appeared to be “much more stable and more lucid,” during Wednesday’s court appearance.

“Treatment is an essential component,” agreed Crowley.

He has allowed Thompson to continue to be screened by various psychiatrists including an assessment that Hornblower requested for an inpatient program.

The judge said he will also allow Hornblower to return to court to review the no-bail order.
