HALLOWELL – The Auburn Youth Hockey Squirt House squad captured its first Tier III victory of the season Sunday with a 5-4 victory over Gardiner Black Diamond Squirts at Kennebec Ice Arena.

Branden Dyer notched a hat trick, and Tyler Couture’s goal at 8:13 of the third period helped Auburn (1-4) stave off Gardiner’s rally from a 4-1 deficit at the end of two.

Dyer scored an unassisted goal 1:54 into the contest and assisted Mitchell Spurr less than four minutes later to give the Red Wings a 2-0 edge.

Jacob Whitley answered for Gardiner to trim the lead in half, but Couture set up Dyer’s strike at 5:38 of the second to get Auburn rolling once again. Dyer converted a feed from Connor Samson at 11:41 of the middle stanza for his third score.

Whitley set up a goal by Logan Peacock in the third period, and Sarah Morgan cashed in assists from Dakota Benson and Odin Jubinville to bring Gardiner within one goal before Couture’s heroics.

Chad Prince scored a late goal for Gardiner with help from Jacob Folsom.

Jameson Pooler picked up the victory in goal for the Red Wings.

Michael Poirier tended the Gardiner net.
