AUGUSTA (AP) – Maine’s wilderness zoning board has completed the first weekend of hearings on Plum Creek’s proposal for a major development in the Moosehead Lake area.

About 300 people attended a hearing Sunday in Augusta. About half of the crowd said they intended to speak. Of those, a little more than one-third said they were in favor of the proposal, and fewer than two-thirds were against it.

Hearings before the Land Use Regulation Commission got under way Saturday in Greenville.

The Seattle-based Plum Creek wants a zoning change on 420,000 acres as part of a 30-year plan to develop 975 house lots and two resorts. About 20,000 acres would be developed.

Additional hearings are scheduled for Dec. 15 in Portland and Dec. 16 in Greenville.
