LEWISTON – State Sen. Peggy Rotundo, D-Lewiston, will be honored by the Androscoggin Land Trust at its annual meeting Thursday.

Rotundo’s work helping to conserve the Androscoggin River Preserve, as well as support for legislation and bonds aimed at cleaning the river helped her qualify. She will receive the Bonnie Lounsbury Environmental Award, given to an area resident who has shown leadership in environmental matters.

Thursday’s meeting is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. at Chase Lounge on the Bates College Campus.

The award was created in 2003 to honor Bonnie Lounsbury, a founder of the group and longtime member of the trust’s Board of Directors. It was first awarded in 2006, to city councilor and former state legislator Lillian O’Brien.

“This is usually given to someone that has dedicated a good deal of time to conservation issues in our region,” said Marnie Coleman, a member of the trust.

Rotundo was instrumental in helping to conserve the Androscoggin River Preserve, according to the group. She also supported legislation to help clean up the Androscoggin River and successfully sponsored the Riverfront Community Development Bond, which will promote river-based economic revitalization across the state.

The meeting will also feature keynote speaker John Piotti, executive director of Maine Farmland Trust, the state’s only conservation organization dedicated to protecting farmland. Piotti will speak on initiatives that will be critical to protecting working lands in the central Androscoggin River corridor.

The Androscoggin Land Trust is a membership-supported conservation organization dedicated to protecting the important natural areas, traditional landscapes, and outdoor experience along the central Androscoggin River corridor. The group claims over 3,100 acres of land, including more than 8 miles of riverfront along the Androscoggin.
