LEWISTON – A former state representative from Lewiston was indicted Thursday on charges that he spent $4,874 in campaign money for personal use and violated election rules.

William Walcott, 30, now living in Prentiss, was charged by an Androscoggin County grand jury with two counts of theft by deception, two counts of violating the Clean Election Act, two counts of misusing entrusted property, and three counts of making false reports.

The indictment alleges that Walcott misspent money meant for campaigning between April 2004 and September 2006, and that he later lied about how the money was used.

The accusations came to light when the state ethics commission decided to audit Walcott after a 48-day delayed repayment of $1,940.56 in unspent money.

Investigators say Walcott failed to return the unused Clean Election money to the state, and that he later admitted to fabricating reports of how he spent the other $2,933.44.

Walcott, who was serving his third term representing most of downtown Lewiston when he was audited, resigned in August. He is expected to be summonsed to appear in court.
