OXFORD – A 95-year-old Waterford woman escaped serious injury Thursday after she was struck by a pickup truck in the Wal-Mart parking lot. Police say the driver had been blinded by sunlight.

“It was not on purpose. As soon as he saw her, he stopped,” officer Christopher Knight said.

Knight, who investigated the noontime accident, said Ralph Gardner of Harrison was driving a 1986 Ford pickup past the main entrance of the store when Isabelle Rolfe stepped out of the store and into a pedestrian crosswalk.

Gardner had just pulled away from a stop sign when Rolfe was struck by the truck’s front bumper, knocking her to the ground, according to Knight.

Knight said Rolfe, who was shopping with neighbors, suffered a few scrapes to her head and was taken to Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway for treatment and observation. “She’s a feisty lady,” he said.

No citations were issued to Gardner.
