Schools to receive book donations

LISBON FALLS – Central Maine Federal Credit Union made its sixth annual book donation to Androscoggin County schools on Dec. 11.

Lisbon High School was among the recipients again this year. “The books are such a timely donation, because just the other day, a student came in looking for new books,” said school librarian Judith Lashman. “It is exciting to be able to provide students with new, quality, young adult titles.

Our community partnerships with Central Maine Federal Credit Union and other organizations are wonderful gifts throughout the year.”

The Lewiston credit union supports its community by making a donation that will benefit students throughout Androscoggin County. It donates books to every public elementary or middle and high school library in the community annually.

This year all Androscoggin County public high schools received the following books for their school libraries: “Sweet 16” by Kate Brian; “Copper Sun,” Sharon Draper; “Nothing But the Truth,” Justina Headley; “Firestorm,” David Klass; “Rebound,” Bob Krech; “The Lies of Locke Lamora,” Scott Lynch: “Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac,” Gabrielle Zevin; “The Book Thief,” Markus Zusak; “The Boy Who Fell Out of the Sky,” Ken Doorstein; “The 9/11 Report,” Sid Jacobson; and “Freedom Walkers,” Russ Freedman.

President Vicki Stuart said, “Books for Kids is Central Maine Federal Credit Union’s signature community project.

We’re proud of the impact this program has on the children in Androscoggin County. This program has been recognized in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006 with the Dora Maxwell Award in recognition of outstanding achievement in a social responsibility program.”

Stuart said the credit union has been active in the Lewiston-Auburn communities for years and this is the third year a donation of books has been made to the middle and high schools. She added, “Credit unions are about helping people and helping our children is an important part of that philosophy.”
