Food pass a lesson in holiday meaning

LISBON – Lisbon Community School students completed a week-long food drive for the holiday season with a “food pass” on Dec. 14.

A food pass works the same way a bucket brigade does. One item at a time was passed from student to student until it reached its destination.

The Student Council invited all classrooms and members of the community to participate.

Peggy Goddard, from the local food bank, said she was thrilled the students helped the community and offered to provide a truck to receive the food and take it to the Lisbon Town Office.

Once at the town office, the items were placed in food baskets and were distributed for the holidays.

“Student Council members created maps and designated stations where each student from every class stood as part of the food pass,” said Kate Race, assistant principal and student council adviser.

“The goal of the food drive was to have an item donated by every member of the student body, or 579 items.

We exceeded our goal and the students felt the real meaning of giving for the holidays,” said Race.

The Student Council meets on a regular basis at the school.

A number of school and community projects are planned for 2008.
