Land trust, geocachers host cabin fever reliever
CANTON – The Androscoggin Land Trust will host the Maine Geocachers Association on Saturday, Jan. 5, at the Alden Hill Road Forest for a winter geocaching hike.
The event is intended for experienced geocachers as well as anyone interested in learning more about geocaching or using a GPS (global positioning system) device.
The Alden Hill Road Forest is a 176-acre upland mixed forest under a long-term conservation lease from Verso Paper (formerly International Paper) of Jay.
It is one of several parcels totaling 968 acres in Canton and Jay under conservation lease on which the trust has the option to practice sustainable forestry.
Those wishing to attend should meet at 10 a.m. in front of the old Canton Municipal Building, Route 140.
There will be a short introductory presentation, during which participants will pair up. Printed pages for logable caches will be handed out in the parking lot.
Expect gentle to moderate terrain.
Geocachers who haven’t cached in the Jay area will want to run a pocket query. Hikers should bring a lunch or plot with new buddies to stop at local eateries.
The association wishes to promote and enhance the geocaching experience for all Mainers.
Androscoggin Land Trust is a membership-supported conservation organization dedicated to protecting the natural areas, landscapes and outdoor experience along the central Androscoggin River corridor.
