• The season’s record for fish was broken at Portland the other day when 10 fishing vessels, which came in the previous night, landed their cargoes at the market. No less than 135,000 pounds of fish were landed, and this is the largest amount by several thousand pounds that has come into the port in one day this winter.

• Interested parties have discovered that Easter Sunday and Patriot’s Day are one and the same in 1908. This is in a sense remarkable, since the two days represent radically opposite religious beliefs. The fact that they come together on the same date may be regarded as somewhat of a modern miracle, a sort of breaking down of old walls.

Lewiston has a “dire need” for more reasonably priced nursing home care, Sen. J. C. Boucher of Lewiston told the Senate yesterday. Boucher said there is a waiting list of 100 persons at the Marcotte Home. The cost of care at most Twin City nursing homes is more than the average worker can pay, he said. While the Marcotte Home charges $15 a week, the other homes charge from $35 to $50 a week. “Even the worker getting $100 a week can’t afford $50 a week to take care of his old mother,” said Boucher.

• A proposal by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to require federally funded family planning agencies to notify parents of minors who receive birth control drugs or devices “will hurt family planning,” according to the director of Tri-County Family Planning, and could accelerate already high teen pregnancy rates in the Twin Cities and in the nation.

• Today’s cars have become so sophisticated that, except for oil changes and minor repairs, the do-it-yourselfer can no longer work on the engine, and can expect to do even fewer repairs on cars coming off the assembly lines in the years ahead, says a New Hampshire auto parts dealer.
