HALLOWELL – The Lewiston Demons hockey team extended its winning streak to three Sunday night, remaining one point out of first place in the Northern Middle School Hockey Leagu with a 6-0 win over Winslow at Kennebec Ice Arena.

Tanner Hubbard got the Demons (7-1-1) on the board in the first period by stuffing in a rebound, assisted by defensemen Brett Vallee and Tommy Hird. The Demons made it a two-goal lead late in the same period when Alex Gregoire scored an unassisted tally.

The score remained that way until very late in the third period. While outshooting the Winslow team by almost 40 shots, it wasn’t until Gregoire’s second goal with three minutes left that the issue was safe. Chris Rancourt assisted that crucial strike.

In the final three minutes, Lewiston snuck in three more goals by David Cusson, Vallee and Kevin Lavertu, who scored just as the final buzzer sounded. Assists went to Hird, Lavertu and Cam Boucher.

The fine defensive efforts of Rudy Pandora, Coleman Morency, Austin Obie and Jake Bergeron kept Winslow off the scoreboard all night long. Credit also goes to Demon goaltenders Brady Ouellette and Noah Hutchinson, who combined for the shutout.

Lewiston spent most of the game in its offensive zone. In addition to many missed opportunities from the point getters, many scoring chances by Nick Gilbert, Devin Bilodeau and Jacob Soucy were turned aside as well. The outstanding goaltending of Cam Tibbetts of Winslow kept it close throughout.

The Demons have four regular-season games left before the playoffs and will try to keep their winning streak alive in two weeks, when they face off against Skowhegan Middle School at KIA on Sunday, Feb. 3.
