FARMINGTON – The Colonial Daughters Chapter, National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, has announced that seven high school seniors have been chosen as DAR Good Citizens for the 2007-2008 academic year.
Sierra Noelle Medling of Farmington is the DAR Good Citizen for Mt. Blue High School; Esther Kathleen Bizier of Livermore, Livermore Falls High School; Chelsea R. Lecander of Stratton, Mt. Abram High School, Cameron Fry of Jay, Jay High School, Mollie McGinnis Kaubrys of Rumford, Mountain Valley High School, Adam Law of Dixfield, Dirigo High School; and Krista Leigh Jamison of Rangeley, Rangeley Lakes Regional School.
Chapter Good Citizen Committee Chairwoman Deborah J. Judkins of Upton said Colonial Daughters Chapter sponsors the seven high schools in their efforts to recognize excellence in their students. The school faculty nominates several candidates each year. The person chosen must have demonstrated each of the qualities defined by the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution to an outstanding degree.
Medling, daughter of Christine Medling, is a member of chorus, National Honor Society, has been involved in sports activities. is the recipient of the Interact Community Service Award and has been nominated for the Toyota Community Scholar Award. She attained highest honor roll status every semester while in high school.
Medling has been involved with community activities as a Red Cross blood drive volunteer, a volunteer tutor at Cascade Brook Elementary School and has worked with Operation Santa Claus. Medling is a certified advocate and hotline operator for the Sexual Assault Victims Emergency Services, a certified literacy volunteer for Program of After School Study and coordinated “Project Pink,” which raised $700 for the Martha Webber Breast Care Center at Franklin Memorial Hospital.
Medling has been employed as a private housekeeper. a private math tutor and babysitter.
She plans to attend college and obtain a master’s degree in women’s studies and health promotion. She wants to participate in a study abroad program and visit Africa.
Bizier, daughter of Greg and Josephine Bizier, has played soccer, basketball and track and was selected student of the month twice. She has served as the president of the civil rights team, on prom committee, on student senate, as the treasurer of her class and attended the Maine Youth Leadership Conference.
She plays an instrument in the jazz band and the marching band as well as being a drum major. She has attended the Kennebec Valley Music Festival for three years. Bizier is also active in “Bagels and Books,” the drama club, the yearbook and the math team. She has earned academic honors for each semester of high school.
Bizier is involved in the work of her church, helps with vacation Bible school activities, helps seniors and is active with the youth ministry and helps put together Thanksgiving baskets at the local food pantry. Bizier plans to attend the University of Maine in Orono and major in secondary education so she can teach math or science.
Lecander, daughter of Jeffrey and Sheila Lecander, has served on student council. She belongs to the civil rights team, the French club and the book club.
She has earned an excellence in art award, an excellence in English award, a Mount Holyoke book award, first-place chemistry project award and academic honors for each semester of high school. She is on the ski team.
Lecander is a vacation Bible school counselor and volunteers in the Stratton recreation program. As a member of the community steel drum band, she helps raise money for SAD 58.
Lecander has been employed by Birchwood Interiors and Boralex Stratton Energy as an office aide and also baby-sits.
She plans to attend college but is still undecided about her major.
Fry, son of Mary and Rodney Fry, has earned the Scholar Athlete Award for Jay High School for the last three years.
He has been on the golf team, ski and tennis teams and played soccer. Fry earned coach’s awards for the ski and tennis teams. He was selected defensive player of the year and MVC honorable mention for his soccer team and he earned MVC academic all-star this year.
Fry has been elected to Student Council, is a member of the National Honor Society and has made honor roll every semester while in high school. He has served on the AIDS Committee, the Prom Committee, the School Academic Committee, was a waiter at senior banquet, an usher at graduation exercises and a journalist for the school newspaper.
He has participated in a peer leadership conference, an active youth conference, Boys State, a Poland Regional Drama Festival and two PI-Cone Math Leagues. Academic awards include a St. Michaels Book Award and excellence in physics, drama and physical education awards.
Fry has been a Red Cross blood drive organizer, Good Shepherd Food-Bank volunteer, Thanksgiving Food Basket volunteer, Operation Santa Claus and Stockings for Soldiers volunteer, Spring and Winter Special Olympics volunteer, Big Brother Big Sister Bowl for Kids’ Sake volunteer, walked for the Relay for Life, helped with a community park renovation, raked senior citizens’ yards and assisted with the Apple Pumpkin Festival. He participated in the autumn and spring school beautification projects for the last three years and is a member of the Healthy Community Coalition.
Fry is employed by a local fitness center as a program supervisor. He has filmed and edited tapes for a local access channel. He plans to major in communications.
Kaubrys, daughter of John and Mary Kaubris, has been elected to student council for all four years. She has been in National Honor Society for three years and worked with Peer Helpers for two years. She has earned academic honors every semester while in Mountain Valley High School and received the President’s Award for Academic Excellence each year. She joined the track team, Nordic ski team and soccer team and she participated in Girls State. Other academic awards include four academic letter awards and awards for academic excellence in Algebra I and U.S. history.
She visits a local nursing home and volunteers with the Oxford County Democrats. As president of Student Council, she organized the first Make a Difference Day and she traveled to New Orleans to volunteer for Habitat for Humanity. She is developing a recycling plan for the high school.
Kaubrys is employed at the Frosty Delite ice cream shop. She takes dance lessons and is on the competition teams. She plans to attend college and major in international relations so she can become a diplomat or ambassador. She is also considering the Peace Corps after college.
Law, son of David and Linda Law, has led his class all four years of high school as vice president and is a member of National Honor Society.
He has helped with dinners for the elderly and on Red Cross blood drives.
Law attended Boys State and national leadership conferences. He was the September Student of the Month. Other academic awards include academic excellence in biology, humanities and physical education.
Law has played basketball, soccer and track and has earned MVP awards in basketball and track. He earned the Iron Man award for basketball and Keegan awards for basketball and track. In track, he earned state medals. Law intends to pursue higher education in the medical field.
Jamison, daughter of Margery and Steve Jamison, has been class president, is a member of the Interact Club, has been on the honor roll all four years and is a member of the National Honor Society.
She earned the 2007 Maine Scholastic Art Gold Key and Merit Award and attended the HOBY Leadership Conference.
She was on the yearbook staff as a photographer.
Jamison has played varsity soccer, basketball and softball and earned 2006-07 East-West Conference Basketball All-Star and 2007 East-West Conference Soccer All-Star.
Jamison has worked at Scoops Ice Cream Parlor and the County Club Inn. She has volunteered as a photographer for the Lakeside Dance Academy. Career plans include becoming a professional photographer for a commercial publication. She plans to attend college with a major in art and design with a concentration in photography.
Colonial Daughters Chapter will entertain the DAR Good Citizens, their parents and school principals and advisers at a luncheon and awards ceremony in March. The guest speaker will be Dr. Thomas Saviello, state representative for District 90.
