ST. AGATHA (AP) – Police are treating an incident in which a man asked two small children if they wanted to go for a ride as a possible abduction attempt.

The incident unfolded in the northern town of St. Agatha (Saint Uh-GAT’), where a man was seen talking to two children, ages 4 and 5, in a mobile home park.

Aroostook County Deputy Sheriff Mitch Wheeler says the man drove away when a woman, possibly a baby sitter, began questioning him Tuesday.

She told investigators that the children had become scared after the man asked them if they wanted to go for a ride. Police are looking for the pickup. Wheeler says it’s “better to be safe than to be sorry.”
