Tax assistance

POLAND – AARP free tax preparation and e-mailing of returns will be done at the Ricker Memorial Library from 1 to 5 p.m. Thursdays by Marty Corey. The number to call for an appointment is 998-3166.

Corey has been assisting taxpayers in Poland for many years and is once again certified by the IRS after taking the AARP training session in Lewiston recently.

Valentine dance

MECHANIC FALLS – The Rock-O-Dundee Riders Snowmobile Club of Oxford will hold its annual Valentine’s Scholarship Dance from 8 p.m. to midnight Saturday, Feb. 9, at the Silver Spurr Banquet Hall.

The Bel Airs will provide the music. There will be door prizes given by local businesses, a 50/50 and a raffle on Longaberger baskets. There will be no auction this year at intermission. All proceeds will go to the scholarship fund.

VFW event

AUBURN – The Captain Frank W. Hulett Post 1603, Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, have applied for a license to hold its second Texas Hold-Em on Saturday, Feb. 16, at the post home at 588 Minot Ave. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. and the game will start at 10 a.m.

Cost will be $55, and those paying prior to the opening will have preference over those having a reservation. The maximum players will be 100.

Tickets may be purchased at the post home from 2 to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays or by calling Donald W. Linscott at 782-6873 for a ticket or to make a reservation. If there are 100 players, the pool will be $3,750, with payouts to the top eight players.

Volunteers needed

AUBURN – The Fresh Air Fund’s Auburn area committee is looking for volunteers to ensure that summer 2008 is special for New York City children.

Each summer, close to 5,000 children, ages 6 to 18, spend two-week vacations with volunteer host families in 13 northeastern states and Ontario, Canada.

Local Fresh Air Fund committee members recruit host families, reach out to the community and coordinate activities for families and children.

Bridge results

LEWISTON – The Lewiston-Auburn Social Bridge Club winners at the Multi-Purpose Center on Jan. 28 were: first, Roger Briggs and Roger Labbe; second, Lue Bilodeau and Les Buzzell; third, Mary Leahey and Nancy Lindgren; first in B, Cynthia Bonsey and Sue Kaluzynski.
