MARLBOROUGH, Mass. – The Lewiston Jr. Maineiac Squirt White hockey team enjoyed a successful weekend at the 2008 Challenge Cup Tournament, advancing to the semifinal game before being eliminated.

Lewiston dropped its opening game to the Southern Maine Huskies Travel ‘B’ team Friday morning, 6-2. Lewiston stayed with the Huskies for two periods but fell short in the third. Liam Benson scored both goals for White, with one of them assisted by Bobby Chabot.

White rebounded Friday afternoon with a convincing 4-0 victory over the Milford Starhawks. White got all its scoring from the second line of Benson, Chabot and Corinne Laberge. Laberge led the way with two goals and one assist. Chabot added a goal and two assists, and Benson chipped in a goal and assist.

Saturday morning, Nick Hawk earned his second shutout in a row and eighth of the year as White overtook the Maine Moose, 3-0. Zach Guimond opened the scoring with a nifty rebound goal off an Owen McCarthy shot. Benson netted the next goal with assists from Laberge and Chabot. McCarthy closed the scoring with an unassisted goal.

The victory propelled the Mainieacs into the semifinal round Sunday and a rematch against the Huskies, who again proved too strong in an 8-2 victory. McCarthy netted both goals, unassisted, for the Maineiacs.

Also putting in outstanding efforts over the weekend for the Maineiacs were Jody Cabral, Steven Hammerton, Andrew Loisel, Eli McBride, Chris Miller, Alex Morgan and Jacob Wall.
