• Over 1,000 people were present last evening at the whist party held in Lewiston’s City Hall under the auspices of Les Enfantes de Marie of the St. Marie and under the supervision of the pastor of the parish. More than 200 tables were placed in the large hall for the whist players. The whist began at 8:45 and concluded at 10:15 p.m. Prizes were then awarded to the winners of the evening.

• After a long discussion last evening at the Auburn City Government meeting, an order authorizing the opening of the Jordan School was finally passed. Residents from the Plummer district whose school will probably be closed by this action were present.

50 years ago, 1958

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – The Navy’s Vanguard rocket blew up shortly after launching early today. The missile took off beautifully and climbed straight up for several seconds. Then, several thousand feet in the sky, it broke into two and started spinning earthward in two sections.

BOSTON – Dr. Roy Feemster, head of the Massachusetts division of communicable diseases, said today well over 5,000 doses of Salk polio vaccine apparently will go to waste in the state. The reason, Feemster said, is that while the vaccine is free, cost of the vaccinations is high. Doctors, supported by national, state and local medical societies, oppose free inoculations for adults, he said.

25 years ago, 1983

AUBURN – Hoping to save time spent on property assessment documents, tax billings and other records, the city is requesting bids on a mini- or micro-computer processor. Auburn is the only municipality of its size in Maine without a computer, according to Purchasing Agent June G. Cyr. While the city has done “extremely well” in contracting for computer services with Advantage Business Systems, which handles payrolls, billings, tax assessment records and compilation of voter lists, it is time to re-evaluate the need for an in-house computer, he said.
