AUBURN – A local man was charged formally Wednesday in connection with the death of a teenager last year at a party of underage drinkers.

An Androscoggin County grand jury indicted Larando J. Sweeting, 23, of 330 Turner St., on charges of giving police a false statement, violating conditions of release and six counts of furnishing liquor to a minor.

One of the furnishing charges is a felony, because it resulted in the death of Adam Beggs, the indictment said. Beggs was 18 when he died after drinking a quart of vodka and whisky during a party at a Granite Street apartment.

An autopsy at the Maine Medical Examiner’s Office declared his death was the result of “acute ethanol intoxication.”

Sweeting provided liquor to Beggs and other party-goers also named in the indictment. The other five counts of furnishing are misdemeanors.

Sweeting also was drinking at the party, a violation of his bail conditions, the indictment said. He also provided a false written statement to police the day after the party, the indictment said.

Sweeting was indicted in October on charges of gross sexual assault and sexual abuse of a minor for allegedly having sex with a girl under age 14 between March 1, 2006, and February 2007.
