LEWISTON – American composer Andrew List will be in the audience Feb. 16 at the Franco-American Heritage Center to hear pianist George Sebastian Lopez perform one of his works, along with compositions by Bach, Beethoven and Chopin.

List, professor of composition and theory at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, has composed music for orchestra, string quartet, chorus, solo voice and solo instrument. He has won numerous commissions from music ensembles and solo artists in the United States and Europe.

“I wrote my six Piano Etudes (which Lopez will perform) during the period when I was studying piano with Thomas Stumpf,” List said. “It was my goal to write one etude a day, and the entire piece was written within a week. Each etude has its own specific mood and character and is focused on a particular aspect of piano technique I was working on in my lessons.”

A graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music, List received his doctorate in music composition from Boston University. He has been a resident of the MacDowell Colony and the Aspen Music Festival, among others; and in 2000, he was awarded a Distinguished Artist-in-Residence grant by the city of Amsterdam, the first American artist to be so honored. A native of St. Louis, List now resides in Boston.
