SANFORD – Ryan Pratt, representing Farmington Elks Lodge No. 2430 in the boys’ 8-9 age division, won the Maine Elks State Hoop Shoot championship Feb. 3 at Sanford High School.

Eighteen boys and girls competed in the event that determined the champions who will advance to regional competition March 27-30 in South Portland.

Pratt edged Brad Bouchard of Sanford and Carter Bruce of Presque Isle in his age bracket. He also received the Amos A. McCallum Outstanding Shooter award as the highest-scoring boy in the competition.

Other winners were Taylor Sargent of Portland (Girls 8-9), Abby Pyne of Bangor (Girls 10-11), Benjamin Leet of Augusta (Boys 10-11), Alexandra Palazzi-Leahy of Portland (Girls 12-13) and Samuel Grindle of Ellsworth (Boys 12-13).

The Elks national competition has grown to include more than 3 million participants each year since it began in 1946.

It is said to be the largest, non-profit, coeducational sports program in the country.
