Judge Savage imposed sentences in the Supreme Court: four years in State Prison for a robbery conviction; two years and six months in State Prison for breaking and entering and larceny; 30 days in jail for wanton and lascivious speech and behavior; and $100 and costs and 60 days in jail for nuisance convictions.

50 years ago, 1958

WASHINGTON – This was a day of triumph – and in one sense, humiliation – for that garrulous old institution, the U.S. Senate. It paid tribute to Sen. Carl Hayden (D-Ariz.), who started on his 47th year in Congress and, thereby, broke the record held previously by Rep. Joseph G. (Uncle Joe) Cannon of Illinois. Cannon served his 46 years in three separate hitches. Hayden has put in 15 years in the House and 31 in the Senate without a break.

PORTLAND – The Portland Citizens Coliseum Committee and its advisory committee of civic and business leaders today approved the construction of a $3 million civic center auditorium.

25 years ago, 1983

Two German shepherds have been selected and are being trained for search and rescue duties as part of the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department’s new canine program. Sheriff Joseph P. Laliberte said the dogs, named Jesse and Kaiser, are being trained by a Wells dog trainer for tracking and search-and-rescue missions. The German shepherds will be the only police dogs in the county. Until now, Androscoggin County police departments have had to borrow dogs from the Maine State Police or other law-enforcement agencies.
