MILTON, N.H. (AP) – New Hampshire officials are cleaning up after an 8,000 pound snow grooming machine went straight to the bottom of a Milton pond.

Bystanders rescued the driver, 33-year-old Mike Hazeltine of Acton, Maine, when the Sno-Cat grooming machine broke through Milton Three Ponds on Saturday. Hazeltine was knocking down snowbanks after ice races for a winter carnival for riders. He steered over to the side to let two riders by and went through the ice.

Hazeltine escaped, swam to the surface, poked his hand through the hole and was pulled out.

Diving teams were at the site over the weekend working to remove the machine and sled from the water.
