CASCO – Momentum Inc., a local social service agency providing support services to individuals with intellectual disabilities, recently sent eight athletes and seven coaches to the three-day annual winter Special Olympics at Sugarloaf/USA.

Among the athletes earning medals were:

Brian Fillion of Norway, snowshoeing, gold, 25m.

Sandy Tracy of Bridgton, snowshoeing, bronze, 25m; snowshoeing, bronze, 50m.

Jerry Cote of South Paris, cross country skiing, bronze, 100m.

Alpine down hill skiing medals went to:

Level I: Elizabeth Weeks of Naples, giant slalom gold, slalom silver, downhill silver.

Level II: James Whitman of Stoneham, giant slalom silver, slalom bronze, downhill gold.

Level III: Stacy Atter of Oxford, giant slalom gold, slalom silver, downhill silver; Robert Madore of Mechanic Falls, giant slalom gold, slalom silver, downhill silver; Levi Akers of Denmark, giant slalom gold, slalom gold, downhill gold.

In addition to his three gold medals, Akers beat last year’s time by 6 seconds and won the Michael Ripley Award for the second year in a row for the fastest downhill skier.

Team Momentum athletes and coaches put in months of training to prepare for the games. Fundraising events were organized to help defray the cost of attending the events.

Dennis Strout, director and coach, said, “Supporting our athletes in realizing their dreams is a primary goal here at Momentum. The Special Olympics experience fosters hard work and team spirit, not to mention having fun while getting fit.
