BRIDGTON – Skiers visiting Shawnee Peak today will help fight domestic violence in two Maine counties.

Maine Attorney General G. Steven Rowe is scheduled to speak from 9 to 10 a.m. at the resort’s main lodge on the issue.

Ten percent of the proceeds from the day’s lift revenues will go to Family Crisis Services, a nonprofit organization that seeks to end domestic violence in Cumberland and Sagadahoc counties. The benefit is part of Shawnee Peak’s “Non-Profit Thursdays” program.

“This is our very first one, and we’re really excited about it,” said Charlotte Nolan, a Bridgton outreach advocate for the organization.

Nolan said Rowe’s remarks will focus on the effect domestic violence has on the state, including financial costs “in the billions of dollars” for court proceedings and incarceration.

Nolan said Family Crisis Services works with the court systems, has a shelter and hotline available, and provides advocates to address different types of abuse, among other services.

The organization will be raffling items at the peak and also provide information. Skiers who give an independent donation will receive a purple ribbon.
