• More good news for Auburn is contained in the announcement yesterday that the Libby property at the corner of Court and Turner streets has been purchased by the National Shoe & Leather Bank. The small wooden buildings now occupying that lot will be torn down, and a brick or granite block costing from $75,000 to $100,000 will be erected in the spring.

BANGOR – The Maine Board of Health has been notified of an epidemic of small pox in Albert County, New Brunswick, which, it is asserted, threatens Boston and industrial centers more than it does Bangor and the other cities along the railroad from St. John to Boston.

50 years ago, 1958

• The disclosure by the State Highway Commission yesterday that a Boston engineering and traffic consultant firm had been engaged to survey the traffic situation and the need of a third bridge in Auburn and Lewiston is good news.

• There’s money hidden in the piles of snow that line the Twin City streets. But the money isn’t under the snow, it’s in the cost of getting it out of the way. Lewiston is already “in the red,” said Lewiston Public Works Department Director George J. Maher. By the end of the month, the city will probably have spent from $10,000 to $20,000 more than the about $35,000 that was allocated for snow removal in the current budget.

25 years ago, 1983

• On Monday while Nigeria was announcing it will slash its oil prices, some Lewiston-Auburn dealers of low-price gasoline predicted gas prices may dive below the $1 mark by this weekend. As of Monday night, Stan Pelletier’s Gulf Station in Auburn was selling a gallon of regular gas for $1.018, while Gibb’s Service Station of Lewiston both reported selling gas for $1.019.

• Six Persian Gulf oil-producing nations face a possible worldwide price war called an emergency meeting for Tuesday. A Saudi newspaper said they planned rollbacks of up to $7 a barrel. OPEC’s basic price is $34 per barrel.
