Officials at Central Maine Healthcare and Parkview Adventist Medical Center announced a letter of intent Monday to bring the small Brunswick hospital under the Central Maine Medical Center parent company as a corporate affiliate.

Central Maine already has similar agreements with Bridgton and Rumford hospitals.

CMMC spokesman Chuck Gill said the hospital has had a working relationship with Parkview for about seven years, using doctors in the same emergency room physician group.

While details of the affiliation won’t be public for several months, Gill said no jobs at Parkview would be immediately affected. The move is not a purchase, he added.

Parkview is a 55-bed hospital founded in 1959 and provides medical, surgical and primary care. Last week it stopped obstetrics services, Gill said.

“One of the things that attracted us” was a commitment to getting out messages about healthy lifestyles and community education, he said.

“The hospital has had some hard times. By becoming part of something bigger, they have access to resources,” Gill said. “It’s providing stability that hospital really needs.”

When asked which institution approached the other, he said both decided it was time.

In a news release, Parkview CEO Ted Lewis said the move ensured the ability to meet community needs. “We will now be able to tap into the specialized management expertise and clinical resources of a tertiary medical center such as CMMC,” he said.
